Stemming from the groundwork of the popular Telegram messaging application, TON is a distinct blockchain network that saw its inception when Telegram made its project’s code public.
Despite leaving the project without launching a mainnet in July 2020, the Telegram team provided a launchpad for future enhancements by open-sourcing the TON code. Picking up where Telegram left off, the TON Foundation has developed the network further, affirming its outstanding scalability, superior transaction throughput, and maintained decentralization compared to other Web3 ecosystem counterparts.
In a notable stride towards enhancing user privacy, TON has moved beyond its initial capability of allowing public messages in transactions. The newly implemented feature ensures end-to-end user message encryption, making them accessible only to the intended recipients.
Expressing enthusiasm for the innovation, Anatoly Makosov, a core developer at TON, said:
When sending Toncoin, Jettons, or NFTs on TON you have always been able to include a text for the recipient such as ‘for coffee’ or ‘happy birthday’, thereby personalising the interaction. Now this popular feature <…> is available with full encryption.
Makosov further stressed the potential significance of this encrypted messaging feature, stating it could be a “reliable” and “safeguarded” method of communication should a catastrophic event disrupt traditional messenger servers.
Currently, TON’s encrypted messaging functionality is supported by several retail wallet apps, including MyTonWallet, OpenMask, and TON Wallet. In addition, the feature is set to be incorporated into the mobile wallet Tonkeeper.
In an industry that’s relentlessly innovating, TON’s introduction of encrypted messaging marks a significant leap in blockchain communication.
